Tips & Tricks for Decorating a Studio Apartment

Living in a small space doesn’t haven’t to mean small design. You simply have to be intentional about your style and decor decisions. At first glance, a studio apartment may seem to limit how to decorate, but with a little creativity and planning, you can turn your studio into a picture-perfect space. wW’ll help you learn how.

Separate Your Space

Most studio apartments are one big room (minus the kitchen and the bathroom) so the living area and bedroom occupy one space. Create “rooms” even if you don’t have any. It will give you the illusion of having more space and be a reminder to keep your sleeping, living, and working spaces separate. Go the easy install route by adding curtains around your sleeping area, or even something less invasive like a room divider.

Another popular option is to use a bookcase as a room divider. The Kallax bookcase from Ikea functions as a room divider, shelves, and has options for storage. Leave some cubes open to allow light to pass through one “room” to another.

No options for physical dividers? Rugs are another easy way. Using rugs creates blocks of color/texture that can help break up a space into different zones.

Choose furniture that serves multiple purposes

Since your space is limited, be strategic with your furniture and pick pieces that can pull double (or triple) duty. Some popular options are ottomans that can be used as a footrest, additional seating, and storage, or a coffee table with a shelf and baskets to clear up clutter.

If you’re really struggling to create room in your studio, think about making the big furniture items multi-purpose. A daybed functions both as a sofa and a bed for sleeping, or a stylish futon offers seating during the waking hours and folds down to a bed at night.

Go Vertical

When you can’t go out, go up! If you’re lucky enough to have a studio with high ceilings, utilize all your space by installing a loft bed. Not only will this free up room in your apartment, but it also helps distinguish your sleeping space from your living space.

If a loft bed isn’t in the cards, try vertical storage. Use tall bookcases to take up space and offer a place to display art, books, and knick-knacks without creating outward clutter.

Wall Color

Color can make or break your space and there are a lot of options depending on your personal style preference. If you’re looking for a clean, minimalist look, stick with all white walls (or something in the white-color family). White walls will create openness and bounce light throughout the studio to make the space look and feel bigger.

If you want bold color, think about painting your studio one solid color on all the walls. Even if you choose a dark color, continuity will go a long way. Plus, rich color will emit cozy, hygge vibes.

Add Mirrors

Mirror mirror on the wall, can you make my studio apartment the biggest of them all? Well, mirrors may not make your studio actually bigger but they can help make your space look and feel bigger. Mirrors reflect light and create a sense of openness that will make the entire studio look and feel bigger than it really is.
