How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room

One of the most important aspects to consider when searching for rugs is the dimension of the rug in relation to your room size and furniture. When you choose the right size rug for your room, you create a warm, balanced space that invites conversation and connection.  An ill-fitting rug however can cause the room to feel uninviting and cold. Follow these tips for choosing your next rug.

Choose the right rug size

Area rugs come in a few standard sizes, so keep this in mind and choose the closest size that matches the dimensions you need.

Standard Area Rug Sizes (in feet):

  • 9 x 12
  • 8 x 10
  • 6 x 9
  • 5 x 7
  • 3 x 5

Living Room

The first rule of thumb when measuring for a living room rug is to leave approximately 12 – 18 inches between the edge of the rug and the wall. This anchors your space and gives visual definition of the seating area. A larger rug than this may make the room appear smaller than it is, while a much smaller rug causes the furniture to appear as if it is floating in space.

Your goal is to create a comfortable seating area. With this in mind, you’ll want to position all furniture with at least two (front) legs on the rug itself. A rug that is wider than the sofa is best especially if you have end tables. They should be positioned on the rug as well.

Bedroom

The ideal rug size for a bedroom will depend upon the size of your room and the size of your bed. Typically bedroom rugs are placed horizontally so that there is ample room to walk around the bed while on the rug. When using a larger rug it’s perfectly acceptable to position the rug underneath the nightstands, up to the edge of the wall. Otherwise place the rug to begin about twelve inches  in front of the nightstand.

Dining Room

Use a dining room rug to really create a statement and elevate your space from function to fabulous. Choose the right rug size for your room by measuring two feet beyond your chairs in all directions. This will ensure a comfortable space for your guests to pull their chairs out and still feel accommodated. When possible match a rectangle rug to a rectangle table and and square or round rug to a square or round table.

Tips to visualize your rug

If you are having difficulty imagining what size of rug you need even after you follow the guidelines above then try this tip. Grab some removable tape (painters tape works) and tape off an area equal to one of the standard rug sizes on your floor. Now you’ll be able to see the outline of where the rug will be placed in your room. If not fully satisfied on the first attempt, measure another size rug on the floor and tape if off for comparison. Choose the size that pleases you most.
