How often do people move?

• The average American moves about 11 to 12 times in their lifetime.

How many people move each year?

• An estimated 43 million Americans move every year.

Americans move more than people in most other countries in the world. In 2013, 24% of the U.S. population reported having moved within the past five years.

Why do people move?

• 40% for work
• 42% personal reasons
• 18% military or government relocations

In 2013, the state people moved to most was Oregon. The state people moved out of most was New Jersey.

Ironically, though, people in the Northeast part of the US move the least, while those in the West move the most.

33% of renters move each year.

Moving is the third most stressful life event; death is first, divorce is second.

The average mover is part of a couple between the ages of 25 and 44 with one or two kids between 2 and 11.

62% of Americans live in the state they were born in.

When do people move?

Nearly half of all moves take place in the summer, when days are longer and school is out, between the beginning of May and Labor Day.
