4 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home to Kickstart 2020

A new year (and a new decade!) means that resolutions are in full force. With so many possibilities, it can get overwhelming trying to decide what changes to make in the upcoming year.

Small, everyday changes can make the biggest impact, especially when it comes to enjoying your home. Check out these 4 New Year’s resolutions to make your home the best place possible in the new year.

Start the Year without Clutter

 Stylish Storage Space on Shelves

It seems like everyone in 2019 was showing off how they “Marie Kondo’d” their home. While tossing things that don’t “spark joy” seemed like it exploded last year, Marie is on to something. According to the pros at WebMD, having a messy living space can cause stress. In fact, one study showed that women who had a messy living space had increased levels of cortisol, aka a stress hormone. Those that had a tidier home had lower levels of cortisol in their system.

Decluttering your home all at once can be quite a task. Start with small goals: commit to going through a new room each month to see what you can part with. Decide what items are simply collecting dust, what clothes you haven’t worn in a while, or what items you’re holding onto “just because”. Donate the items to charity to give them a new life in a new home.

Lastly, Put items that you want to keep in stylish and functional storage, such as baskets on the shelves, or storage ottomans and benches. They’ll be within arms reach but not strewn around your home haphazardly.

Keep it Clean

Now that your home is tidy, you’ll want to keep it that way! Cleaning your home can seem like a big chore, so instead of trying to tackle everything at once, break it down into a manageable schedule. Start by creating a small list of daily tasks that you can easily tackle, and then create a weekly list of big-cleaning items. Over time, you’ll be able to breeze through the list and your home will be happier for it.

Power Down

Make your home energy efficient with new LED bulbs

Most energy companies send a breakdown of your electricity usage with each bill, which contains some super useful information. Consider running large appliances, such as your dishwasher, later during the day when energy surges are low (usually after 8 or 9 PM). Switch your bulbs to energy-efficient lights, turn off lamps when you leave the room, and unplug power strips and energy-sucking electronics when you’re out of town. These small changes are not only good for the planet but good for your wallet.

Create a Space for Entertaining

Living Room Accessories

Lots of people want to spend more time with friends and family in the new year, and what better place than your home? Use the new year as an opportunity to give your space an update that truly reflects your personality. Add a throw pillow here and there, houseplants, an accent rug, and some art to add style without breaking the bank (or adding clutter!)

If you’re looking to make a bigger change to your style but aren’t ready to commit to purchasing new furniture, consider renting furniture to switch it up. You’ll be able to try out new styles with furniture packages curated by designers. When you’re ready to make a change or if you’re moving to a new place, all the heavy lifting is done for you by a team of professionals.

Not only will you have a welcoming environment for guests, but you’ll also have a home that is fresh and new for the year, and decade, ahead.

With these simple resolutions, you’re bound to start 2020 on the right track. For more design tips or to start the new year with a new style, contact the team at Fashion Furniture Rental.
